The other day, my daughter drove me home from running errands. Since she's in the final stages of obtaining her license, I try to give her plenty of opportunities to practice. She improves her driving skills each time we go out. She commented that she is less nervous and is starting to enjoy the ride.
Usually, my eyes are fixated on the road and her driving skills, but this time I became distracted by the contents of my purse. I was looking for my tissue pack and noticed all the other items that didn't belong. I collected old receipts, mint and gum wrappers, notes taken from a recent college visit, a new tea bag I planned to use when I reached my destination, masks (old and new), and a well-loved lipstick. Stuff that occupied my purse that had a purpose at one time but no longer did was weighing my purse down, which also meant dragging my shoulder and arm down. I thought to myself, "I can't believe I carried all this excess for no reason. That's a lot of accumulated junk; why didn't I clean out my purse sooner?"
It felt good to clean out my purse. Something I use daily should be clean and functional. The same concept should be applied to life. Throw out what's useless and has no purpose. Sometimes we hold on longer than we should, and all it does is weigh us down.
Life lesson: Let it go! This may include certain unhealthy relationships, memories, mementos, or keepsakes. Please don't hold on to what you know needs to be out of your life. We waste too much time and energy on what does not serve us well.
