Distractions

Happy February!

Since returning from South Korea, I have made adjustments for a more productive new year. But like any other time I try to make changes, I tend to become more easily distracted—some distractions are worthy of my time, and some are not. I discussed this with the Holy Spirit for His guidance, and instantly, he reminded me of a skit I did with my MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) leadership team for a women's conference 16 years ago. I didn't have access to it, so I had to dig through YouTube to find it.

My husband and I watched it together; even though it was years ago, it still spoke to us. I had goosebumps, not because of how cringy it was to see myself act but because of the message. Its meaning was so timely that I sent it to my kids to watch. I inquired what five distractions keep them from a thriving relationship with Jesus. I found it a resourceful way to identify how to pray for them. I knew of some obvious ones, like social media and school stress, but one stood out, which I plan to be relentless in interceding for.

I was hesitant to post the video link here because of my lack of acting skills, but I felt led by the Holy Spirit to share it. I hope that by sharing the video, I can help you identify and address the distractions in your spiritual life. Take it for what it's worth; if it speaks to you, excellent. If not, no worries.

Reflecting on the obvious, I was reminded of a book I read with my oldest back in 6th grade, Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. The part that connects with the skit is at the beginning when the devil coaches his nephew on how to use the main character's demands as unhealthy distractions. The skit and the book both highlight how the devil can use what we believe to be good to keep us less focused on God.

You may find yourself in a similar situation, struggling with distractions. It's a common challenge we all face. Pay attention to what consumes your time and attention. What brings you closer to Jesus, and what pulls you away? Seek the Lord's help to refocus so that the rest of 2025 will be your most fruitful year yet.
