When my children were young, they loved playing hide n seek. One of them would cover their eyes, count to twenty, and then the other two would go and hide. After they reached twenty, the seeker would run and try to find the two hiding. They would play inside or outside the house, with their siblings, or with a whole gang of kids. You always heard an eruption of squeals when they discovered one another. The more they played, the better they became at finding the secret hiding places.
When my daughter was around three, she started playing the hide n seek game with her older brother. She would hide in the usual spots, behind a door, under a blanket, or in a closet. But there was this one time she established a new location - behind our living room curtain. Since I was in the same room, she asked me not to tell her brother when he came looking for her. In all her excitement, she forgot about her itty bitty toes peeking out underneath the fabric. I quietly giggled at her naive and innocent request.
I compare the thrilling hide n seek game to a thriving relationship with Christ. Instead of people running after one another, we are running after God. God is hiding, and we are seeking Him.
Proverbs 25:2, says "God conceals the revelation of his word in the hiding place of his glory. But the honor of kings is revealed by how they thoroughly search out the deeper meaning of all that God says." -TPT
My daughter hid in her secret spot when they played again, but my son missed her completely this time. Even with her tiny toes exposing her location, my son overlooked her. How often do we neglect the obvious trail of bread crumbs God leaves for us to find?
For various reasons, we sometimes mistakenly take the hider's role, and God becomes the seeker. In actuality, God is always seeking us; He lovingly desires an active relationship with us ALL the time. However, we are the ones who make the relationship passive by hiding from Him and not pursuing Him. We shouldn't hide from Him but hide in Him. Psalm 9:9 "All who are oppressed may come to you as a shelter in the time of trouble, a perfect hiding place." -TPT
God loves to play hide n seek with His children. The more we play, the better seekers we will become.
Proverbs 8:17 "I love those who love me;
And those who diligently seek me will find me." -NIV
