I like to speak declarations over my children before they leave the house, and one particular morning was no different. I said the usual ones that I have on repeat and then added new ones along the way. As my son was walking out the door, I commented to go love on those that are unlovable. I pondered why I made that statement as I watched him leave. It's not like my son divulged any relational issues with his colleagues. So why did I say it? After a few seconds of thought, it was evident it was a personal declaration for me. Because recently, I have been around those kinds of people. People who are negative, rude, and, let's be real, hard to be around.
Ironically, I have been reading through the Book of Luke and was on chapter 6 the day I had my realization.
"But I say to you who hear, love your enemies and do something wonderful for them in return for their hatred. When someone curses you, bless that person in return. When others mistreat and harass you, accept it as your mission to pray for them. To those who despise you, continue to serve them and minister to them. If someone takes away your coat, give him as a gift your shirt as well. When someone comes to beg from you, give to that person what you have. When things are wrongly taken from you, do not demand they be given back. The way you want others to treat you is how you should treat everyone else. "Are you really showing true love by loving only those who love you? Even those who don't know God will do that. Are you really showing compassion when you do good deeds only to those who do good deeds to you? Even those who don't know God will do that. "If you lend money only to those you know will repay you, what credit is that to your character? Even those who don't know God do that. Rather love your enemies and continue to treat them well. When you lend money, don't despair if you are never paid back, for it is not lost. You will receive a rich reward and you will be known as true children of the Most High God, having his same nature. Be like your Father who is famous for his kindness to heal even the thankless and cruel. Overflow with mercy and compassion for others, just as your heavenly Father overflows with mercy and compassion for all."
~Luke 6:27-36 (TPT)
After meditating on the passage all day, I decided to go in the opposite spirit of what my mind wanted to do. I went out of the way and bought something I knew these individuals would enjoy. I made time to assist them in areas that would only benefit them. And when these individuals were condescending, I responded with respect.
I'm praying this will become easier to do because it was challenging, but I know this is the beginning of a process that will bring me closer to His nature.
What about you? How do you handle difficult people in your life? Do you follow the directives in Luke 6? Let's be known as true children of the Most High God together. ☺
