My youngest is stepping up to the plate. He was asked to be an Oikos leader, a role that involves guiding and mentoring a group of young individuals, for his youth ministry. He is the only male leader, with three female co-leaders for their group. A pastor asked him a few months ago, and we have asked our son to consider this opportunity prayerfully. We discussed with our son the responsibilities he will have as a leader as well as the privilege of holding this position. We pointed out his specific role as the male leader among the high school and middle school young men. We reminded him that he would be held to a higher standard as a leader and needed to use discernment in his actions and words as he would have many eyes and ears paying attention to him. It can be fun and games, but with responsibility, and as an upperclassman and a leader, he is an influencer, like it or not.

We mentioned that he would have to focus outwardly instead of being inwardly absorbed, especially with those more reserved. This means actively reaching out to those who may be quieter or less involved, and making an effort to understand and support them. And how this role isn't just during their weekend group gatherings but throughout the week. We asked him how he could be considerate of them and intercede on their behalf. He responded that he would reach out, send texts, and pray for them.We also nudged our son to pray about five areas that he believes God is asking him to focus on as a leader, such as patience, understanding, and empathy, and to find corresponding passages he can rest on. We both have a copy of the list to refer to throughout the year and to keep him accountable.

In addition, we asked him to seek the Holy Spirit for specific words and prayer points for the young men in his group. We mentioned how awesome it would be at the end of the year when he shows each person how he prayed for them specifically and how God answered it.

Another important tip we mentioned is to be himself. Be free and share. Since some of the guys are younger than my son and have yet to have the life experiences he has had so far, be open and transparent when possible. One of the best ways to be a leader is to gain the trust of others by being human with them.

My son had and still has many people investing in him; it is our son's turn to give back and sow into others. We know leadership doesn’t happen with a wave of a magic wand so we are praying that we're giving our son the right tools to lead Ahn, not off. We look forward to watching him grow and mature in this new role, as this is just the beginning.
