Lifetime of Memories

This summer, we embarked on an unforgettable family trip to Korea that significantly strengthened our bonds. Each day presented us with new adventures; we encountered unexpected challenges that required us to be exceptionally flexible and compassionate toward one another. Moments of laughter alternated with minor mishaps, allowing us to appreciate each other’s strengths and quirks in ways I had never noticed before. I always thought I knew my family well, but this journey revealed deeper layers of their personalities, enhancing our connections and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

My youngest son has an incredible bond with his brother, showcasing a deep sense of love and selflessness that often leaves me in awe. From the start of the trip, without needing to be asked, he readily stepped up to assist, willingly pushed his brother in a wheelchair along all of our outdoor/indoor quests, even when navigating the steep and uneven terrain. He approached the task with a joyful spirit, turning what could be a challenge into an enjoyable game, filled with laughter and playful banter.

In addition, he consistently displayed his caring nature in the little moments. He’s the one who lingered at the end of a room, ensuring that his sister and I were never left behind. He instinctively understood the importance of keeping our family united, always positioning us in front of him, as if to shield us and guide our way. His protective instincts shined, as he diligently made sure that everyone felt secure and together, embodying the role of a devoted guardian. It is heartwarming to witness this fierce dedication to our family, as he truly is a protector and steadfast companion.

My daughter demonstrated her commitment to our family, much like she always has. With two members of our household unavailable to help with the bags and suitcases, she took it upon herself to tackle the daunting task of transporting them. I watched in amazement as she effortlessly maneuvered the bulkiest of our luggage. It was a stark reminder of her dedication to fitness; the countless hours she had spent in the gym had clearly paid off. Her physical strength was impressive, and I felt a wave of gratitude for her willingness to shoulder such a significant burden, allowing my husband and me to navigate the airport without the struggle we had expected. ☺

Before the trip, she compiled an extensive list of to do's for her first visit to Korea, but after her brother's accident, she researched each place again and their surroundings, and quietly crossed most of them off. Each crossing was a silent acknowledgment of her desire to prioritize her brother's comfort over her own ambitions. Though we never voiced our reluctancy, I was deeply moved by the profound compassion she displayed for him. It was a selfless act that revealed a depth of love and understanding that she may never truly grasp, yet it resonated with me more than words could convey.

My eldest son confronted the most significant challenges, yet he had consistently kept his disappointment hidden from us. One morning, during our devotional, he took a moment to be transparent and shared about the flood of text messages he had been receiving about upcoming volleyball tournaments. I could see how much it weighed on him. Each notification was a reminder of the events he had once looked forward to with great enthusiasm, moments filled with excitement and camaraderie that now felt so distant. It was heart-wrenching to realize that while he received these updates, he was no longer able to participate in them. Since it weighed on him, it now weighed on me times 100.

Even though he was struggling, he wore a smile and maintained a positive attitude, ensuring our family remained in good spirits. It was as if he had taken a personal hit for the sake of the team—our family team—putting aside his feelings for the greater harmony of our experiences together.

This trip required him to reassess his self-sufficiency, often a hallmark of his personality, and to accept help graciously from those around him. The very person who is typically the go-to support for others, the one everyone relies on, found himself needing to lean on his family more than ever. His ability to navigate this situation with resilience and humility makes him remarkable to me. He is a testament to the enduring bonds of family.

My husband has truly been the MVP of this entire trip. He has taken on the roles of planner, translator, navigator, and caretaker with incredible dedication. One example out of many was when our family (all of us at the same time) experienced a bout of food poisoning that left us either bedridden or rushing to the bathroom—definitely TMI. Despite feeling unwell himself, he selflessly ventured out not once, but twice, to find medication and procure a variety of nourishing foods designed to help us regain our strength. I'm so grateful for his unwavering support and leadership during this challenging time, showcasing his love and dedication for our family.

At the start of our journey, one of my dear friends shared a heartfelt message with me that resonated deeply. Her words captured the essence of what I was hoping for during our trip, and I found myself in complete agreement with her sentiments.

“Love how you all get to experience this together as a family and really bond even stronger through the unexpected, learning how to push through, trusting God, but also giving of yourselves to each other. Such a beautiful lesson of living in Kingdom community. The ebb and flow of emotions, of loving and giving. Encouraging and being encouraged. “

My sister sent me similar messages throughout the trip giving me pointers in how to remain positive. All the messages served as our guiding mantra throughout the entire trip, helping us navigate through both the challenges and joys we encountered along the way. I believe that this mantra will resonate with us for a lifetime, reminding us to cherish each moment and embrace the journey ahead with open hearts.
