My son is scheduled to take his driver's test this week. I'm thrilled for this new chapter in his life but shaking in my boots simultaneously. I remember the first time I drove by myself after obtaining my license; it was so freeing. I felt so independent and mature, just me and the open road. Well, now it's my son's turn.
This new highway to freedom is not only because of a driver's license but because my son turns 18 in a few months. He will be an official adult. Currently, we're up to our eyeballs with college searches that match his desires and requirements. A lot has changed since we went to college, so more research and study are involved. Our goal is to position our son in an environment that will produce the best version of himself. We honor his choices but more importantly, we desire to glorify God and what He divinely plans for him.
This is our son's journey and not ours. Once my son has his driver's license, we are no longer in the driver's seat. Yes, it's scary, and I may cover my eyes like I do when I'm riding on a roller coaster, but we have to let our son take the wheel; accelerate the gas when he is forcing his way uphill, and pump the breaks when he is flying downhill. My son is in the driver's seat of his life now as we move to the backseat and let him drive. My son can always stop and ask us for directions, but his GPS (God's Positioning System) will guide him better than we ever will.
Trust me, this is not easy to do, but I know it's what we're supposed to do and what is best for our son. "Son, take the keys and get in position. You have the open road waiting for you."
