My daughter is in the early college program, where she is enrolled at the local public school as a senior and the community college as a sophomore. This coming May, she will receive an Associate's Degree in Biological Sciences, and then in June, she will graduate with her high school diploma. It has not been an easy road: many sleepless nights, weekend study sessions, and no real breaks during the summer either. And then on top of that, she is in the thick of college applications now. She has reviewed potential colleges, scoped out virtual tours, physically visited campuses, and has been writing several iterations of her essays. Even with all the college advice platforms, the process is overwhelming.
We have had countless discussions with our daughter about what she's looking for in a school and checking off the boxes. But what caught my attention in her criteria is how none of it included anything fun—her focus is on how she can graduate as soon as possible, attend dental school, and then start working.
Although I applaud her for her dedication and desire to start her career, my plea to her is to find a college that will also offer satisfaction in the areas she enjoys. My advice to her and my sons is to relish these years and not to rush being an adult because they will have a lifetime being one. And the advice I have to remember as an adult is to just enjoy it. Don't be so focused on the future that you lose sight of the present and miss out.
"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." ~Matthew 6:34 (NIV)
I may feel the weight of the world, but I have to remind myself to find delight in my life today, don't take life too seriously, and most importantly, trust God has everything under His control.
**I need to put money where my mouth is and be an example for my daughter (and sons). ☺
