Standing in the Gap

There's a story in the Bible I used to skim over. But then I became a mother, and now I can't read it without crying.
It's the moment Mary stands at the foot of the cross, watching her Son suffer. Not just any son. The Son. The Savior. The Son she once carried in her womb. The Son she once held in her arms. The Son who was now hanging on a cross. The same hands she once kissed, now pierced by nails.
The crowd is shouting. The soldiers are mocking. The sky is darkening. And then He looks at her.
Jesus looks out into the crowd and sees His "Ima" (mom); what happens next is heart-wrenching.
His eyes find hers in the chaos. Through the pain, through the blood, through the noise.
She had to do the hardest thing a mother could ever do at that moment. To let Him go. Trusting the very God who once asked her to carry him.
Even in His suffering, He doesn't miss her. "Woman, behold your son." And to John, "Behold your mother." He makes sure she's cared for. He gives her someone to walk with in the days ahead. Even at the end, He makes sure she's not alone.
That verse? It wrecks me. Because now, I see it with a mother's heart. I can't imagine Mary's ache. But I also can't imagine the honor.
This isn't just a Bible story. It really happened. And it reminds me, there's nothing quite like a mother's love. Steady. Fierce. Mary stood there with a heart full of ache. But also a heart full of love that would leave a mark on eternity.
To every mother who's stood in the gap, held on through the pain, and loved without condition, this day is for you.
Your love is a glimpse of heaven. It's a reflection of a God who chose you and to partner with you in the holy, breathtaking work of creation and nurturing life on earth.
