One of my many responsibilities in our home is to do laundry. Embarrassing to admit, I learned how to do laundry when I went to college. My brother taught me the steps. First, he instructed me how to read the clothing label. Second, he advised separating clothing by color and what items go in cold and hot temperatures. After his easy-to-follow instructions, I have done laundry for myself, my family, and even others when needed.
Contrary to popular votes, I personally enjoy doing the laundry. Call me weird, but I like serving my family in this way. I can honestly say I enjoy doing laundry over the task of cooking.
I appreciate seeing dirty, stained, and smelly clothes "magically" turn into clean, spotless, and lemony soft. There is something special about that fresh smell. It's like a shot of dopamine/happy hormone. Another part I love to do is fold the laundry. I sit on my floor, have everyone's laundry basket nearby, fold and then sort. This is an excellent opportunity to check inventory and create a shopping list of who needs what (new undergarments, socks, t-shirts, shorts, etc.). Some of my kids are great at communicating their needs, but I have one in particular who is a minimalist and doesn't care to have anything more than necessary, which I applaud.
I educated my kiddos on using the laundry machines early on to be ready to complete the chore independently. Nevertheless, I prefer to do it myself because it's another opportunity to pray for my family.
For example, when I fold their socks, I pray the Lord will bless their steps.
"Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil." ~Proverbs 4:26-27
When they wear the undergarments, I speak purity over their body parts and against physical abuse and sexual violation.
"For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God;" ~1 Thessalonians 4:3-5
When they slip on their shirts, I prophesy that it is like their breastplate of righteousness. May they always obey God's commandments and live in a way that is honorable to Him.
With three athletic kids, I am washing jerseys daily. I declare when they are on and off the court/field, they will demonstrate athleticism, leadership, and humility. Of course, we always ask for safety from the top of their heads to the bottom of their toes.
Although laundry is a menial task, make it meaningful. Take a moment and pray for your loved ones. Pray them clean, spotless, and lemony fresh.☺
