Pick Up

My oldest goes to college in Pennsylvania, and a way for us to stay connected is we correspond daily by group text. And then on Sunday evenings we Facetime for a couple of hours with the whole family. (If I had it my way, I would Facetime every day, but that may be too much for everyone. ☺)

Anyway, last week, we had reasons to reach out to our son outside of our scheduled Sunday chat. On Wednesday, I texted him and asked if it was a good time to talk, and he answered that he was in the lab and was unavailable. Then on Friday, my son shared he was going off campus to eat Korean food for dinner with some friends, so my husband had called him twice after he found out, but my son texted back and said he would phone him later.

Both times, my husband and I didn't have anything serious to discuss. We just wanted to pass on some good news. My son had requested a specific purchase, but we didn't confirm when we would make it happen. So when the shipment arrived on Wednesday, I had hoped to surprise him. But he was too busy and didn't try to reconnect. The bonus was that we received double what my son had asked for. Later, I found out my husband reached out to our son because he had hoped to bless him and his friends by buying dinner for everyone. However, my son never answered.

When my husband and I discussed what happened, we chuckled and said our son was missing out. He should've picked up our call or tried to return it, and he would've received more than he asked for and could have blessed those around him.

Well, come to find out, the joke was on me. God laughed at me for chuckling at my son. He said how many times have I 'called' you to give you the very thing you asked for and even more, but you were too busy to receive it? And then He proceeded to say, what about the times I tried to bless you and those around you, but you figured your way was better and never discussed it with me? *Mic drop*

My son felt the same as I did when we shared what happened on the other side of his busyness. I exposed my humbling moment with God with the family and how I am guilty of the very same thing. Maybe you are too?

Hopefully, we all learned our lesson this time. When God 'calls,' don't delay and answer right away. My son will receive what he was waiting for and more, and there will be other opportunities when my husband can pay for dinner for my son and his friends.
