My youngest volunteered at VBS last week. He was a counselor last year, too, but this year was a little different since he's a high schooler, which required more responsibilities. Plus, he volunteered solo (no siblings). Usually, whenever there are any volunteer opportunities, my trio would do it together.
The weekend leading up to the official start of VBS, my son expressed how excited he was. He talked about his specific duties as a counselor, including the skit he was committed to performing, the students assigned to him, and how he planned to interact with them.
My son's enthusiasm piqued my curiosity. Will this be all fun and games? Extra hangout time with a few of his friends? Or will he take his commitment seriously? Will he be a role model for the younger volunteers? How will he impact his students? What will he learn from this experience?
Gratefully, he brought closure to my questions. As a family, we try to read a chapter of the Bible daily and then share via text a highlight that sticks out to us. Well, my son's takeaway from Mark 10 gave me the assurance I needed. "Once we die, we can only hope our legacy and the kingdom of God is carried on. The next generation is where it's at. I take this verse personally as I'm doing VBS, and I will give 110% because they are the next generation." -Christian Ahn (Age 15)
I loved how he made the connection and knew his investment would make an impact for years to come. Let's continue encouraging our children to think beyond themselves and to find ways to influence kingdom-mindedness in those around them.
